You could spend years diving in the Maldives. But if you must plan one trip, and one trip only – you have got to consider Baa Atoll!
While the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific draw the crowds, Baa Atoll quietly holds the single most extraordinary marine wildlife spectacle on earth – one that takes place right here in the Indian Ocean, just a short flight from every major Indian city.
The southwest monsoon pushes vast blooms of plankton into the funnel-shaped bay at Hanifaru, and what follows defies description: hundreds of reef manta rays and whale sharks gather simultaneously in a space no larger than a football field, looping in cyclone feeding formations as they engulf the nutrient soup. July and August sit squarely in peak season, with the full moon on the 29th July and 28th August making our trips astronomically ideal for the largest aggregations.

As always, your Bangalore Scuba dive professional will be with you throughout the trip (topside and underwater) so you can focus entirely on the experience.
We will be basing ourselves on one of the closest inhabited island to Hanifaru Bay, and home to some of the best local dive operators in the Maldives. From here, Hanifaru Bay is a 15-minute boat ride away, meaning we can respond rapidly to manta alerts and never miss the action.
Baa atoll is known to offer exceptional scuba diving across a network of thilas, cleaning stations, and channel dives teeming with sharks, turtles, rays, eels, and all the other little fishies on the colorful reefs!
Baa Atoll is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve – one of only a handful of marine areas on earth to hold that designation. The diving reflects it. A network of thilas (submerged pinnacles), kandhus (channels), and cleaning stations supports one of the most diverse and abundant reef ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.
But the undisputed centrepiece is Hanifaru Bay, a site of unparalleled significance in the world.
Baa Atoll has 75 islands (with 13 being inhabited), and is away from some of the busier atolls to the south, which helps it retain a sense of peaceful calm.

Besides the majestic manta rays, you may expect frequent sightings of other bigger marine species such as sharks, turtles, dolphins, whale sharks and many more.
2 excursion(s) to the famed Hanifaru Bay* (also known as Vandhumaafru Adi) for snorkelling with the manta rays are also included in this trip, making this a nice vacation for your non-diving friends/ family members as well.

Note on Hanifaru manta alerts: Hanifaru Bay operates on a rapid-alert system. When manta activity is sighted, the WhatsApp network of guides, rangers, and guesthouses activates immediately. Our proximity means we will almost always be among the first boats in the water. The itinerary above is intentionally flexible to allow us to respond to the bay on any given day.
Please consider booking your return flights after 12:00 pm on 1 August (Trip 1), or 30 August (Trip 2), to allow for adequate no-fly time following the final dive on the previous day.
In our assessment of diving in the region over the past years combined with the local dive guides’ knowledge – most, if not all the diving will be concentrated in the eastern part and inner reefs of the atoll to take shelter from the open sea on the western front.
What this means is that strong channel currents (that the Maldives is typically known for) are somewhat rare in Baa Atoll, and you will enjoy swimming around the famous underwater pinnacles (locally known as “thilas” in independent buddy teams at times.

Some of the highlight sites (selected from a whopping 60+ sites) include Dhonfanu Thila, Yellow Wall, Dhigali Thila (one of Maldives’ finest; known for canyons and overhangs), Dharavandhoo Thila, Anga Faru (site for grey reef sharks), Nelivaru Haa (another manta cleaning station – yay!), Milaidhoo Wall, Christmas Tree (photographers’ favourite), and the Blue hole (yes, that is right; look for leaf fishes and unique nudibranchs in the swim throughs).
We have spent some time thinking about the options and we have come up with a schedule that we feel will give you the best diving that Baa Atoll has to offer.
You will be doing 10 dives on this trip. All dives are guided, and group sizes adjusted for the experience level and comfort level of all divers. Each day, the dive team will decide on the best options for the day and our intent is to dive a wide variety of locations bearing the conditions in mind.
Water temperatures in Baa Atoll remain stable year-round at 27–29°C. A 3mm wetsuit or swimsuit is sufficient for most divers. Visibility on dive sites ranges from 15–30 metres; inside Hanifaru Bay, visibility is often reduced to 5–10 metres due to the sheer volume of plankton – this is a feature, not a problem.
Currents vary from gentle (Hanifaru snorkel, reef dives) to strong (channel dives on full and new moons). This trip is open to divers of all experience levels.
If you would like to pursue any advanced/specialty courses, this is an opportunity to combine learning with some of the most fantastic sightings that you can hope to doodle in your logbooks.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Hanifaru Bay is a Marine Protected Area and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve core zone. Snorkeling sessions are typically 45-55 minutes, accompanied by a guide at all times. Scuba diving inside the bay is entirely prohibited. This rule is absolute and non-negotiable.
The bay works on tidal dynamics: as the tide rises, plankton-rich water is pushed through the funnel-shaped bay and becomes concentrated, triggering feeding. The best days are typically within a few days of the full moon and new moon, when tidal range is greatest. Our August 28 full moon is perfectly timed.
We have scouted around and chosen to be based out of Dharavandhoo island in Baa Atoll. The island is approximately 116 kilometers from Male, and has approximately 1000 residents.
Accommodation is on twin or double sharing basis at well regarded boutique guesthouse that houses an in-house restaurant and outdoor verandas that is apt for ample post dive socializing.

Your rooms will come with en-suite shower and toilet, air conditioning, free WI-FI, free bottled water, mini bar, free tea and coffee, coffee maker, and refrigerator.
The property sits within a short walk of the dive centre and jetty, and offers stunning views of the lagoon.
Breakfast is included daily. Lunch and dinner are available at the guesthouse restaurant or at local eateries on the island – A few cafés on the island serve very good short eats and fresh juices.

The island is small and the dive centre is a short walk away, so turnaround times are minimal. Note: We will be based out of a local Maldivian island, so alcohol is not available for purchase on the island itself.
